A couple more items this week, the first from friday's Times amused me, and the second from the News of the World shows the Germans at their best.

FRIDAY AUGUST 24 2001
Stepfather 'hit son for winning at Monopoly'
BY A CORRESPONDENT
A MAN punched his 13-year-old stepson and kneed him in the groin after losing a game of Monopoly, a court heard yesterday.

The stepfather, 49, who cannot be named for legal reasons, forced the boy’s 11-year-old sister to play and flew into a rage when he lost against her too, a jury at Blackfriars Crown Court was told.

So many rows erupted over the game that the boy’s mother threw the board away when the father smashed up a table after another defeat.

The defendant, from Penge, southeast London, denies two charges of child cruelty and one charge of causing actual bodily harm between October 1998 and August 2000.

The man left the teenager with 17 bruises after landing on his property and being bankrupted, the boy said. “His knee came up to my stomach and private area.” The boy said that his stepfather shouted: “He has ruined my life.”

“How can I have ruined his life over one game of Monopoly?” the teenager asked the court. “He gets my sister to play, even though she doesn’t like it. He gets annoyed because he tells her she’s got to play and then he loses.”

The boy, who now lives with his natural father, denied that when he won a game he put his hand up in a victory salute and shouted: “I’ve beaten the wr.”

The case continues.

GERMANS LAUGH AT ERIKSSON

THE Germans took an arrogant swipe at England last night, bragging: "You don't stand a chance against us."

Just two weeks before Sven Goran Eriksson's side travel to Munich for their crucial World Cup qualifier, German legend Uli Hoeness bleated: "England don't stand a chance.

"I am 100 per cent convinced we will obtain a clear-cut victory over England.

"How the hell can you expect England to come to Germany and win?

"That is something that has not happened for a hundred years."
